Principles of living systems to inform UX & design

The purposes of life and design

What drives people to act? In moments of upheaval, like the Syrian uprising of 2011, the answers become starkly clear: the need to connect, to achieve, and to adapt. These fundamental drives of living systems inspire how we design for humans and communities:

  1. Cohesion – Our need to connect, sustain, and care for ourselves and others.
  2. Proliferation – Our drive to grow, achieve, and leave a mark.
  3. Transcendence – Our urge to explore, learn, and adapt to change.

When we design products, we focus too much on growth—creating solutions that chase performance and dominance. But when we neglect connection and exploration, we end up with systems that fragment people, exploit communities, and damage our environment.

instead, good design must balance all three drives. By creating for connection, growth, and exploration, we can build systems that help societies, organizations, and ecosystems truly thrive.
