Conflict in a digital place

Can digital design amplify or resolve conflict? Drawing on the story of VOCI, a grassroots online community of students in Syria, we explore in this article how digital platforms both shape and are shaped by tensions.

When a dispute about governance erupted among VOCI's core members, it quickly transformed into a battle over control of the community's digital assets. We show how choices in digital design and architecture impact community governance and collective struggles.

We challenge ourselves to rethink how we design digital spaces, suggesting that technology can—and should—play a proactive role in managing conflict.
